Post 6009 Heritage

In 1946, veterans in the Felton area joined together and decided to seek a charter establishing a VFW Post for the Felton area. To name the Post, the veterans placed the names of Felton's fallen comrades, killed during WWII, into a hat and three names were drawn. The names drawn were Loran Adams, Caleb Simpler and John Ware. Thus became the Adams-Simpler-Ware VFW Post 6009. There were 77 Charter Members of the Post. Our first Commander of Post 6009 was Richard Adams, brother of Loran Adams.

Since then VFW Post 6009 has actively supported veterans in need and has been deeply involved in community activities. The Post sponsors an annual scholarship to a Lake Forest High School Senior for study in a medical related field. The Post selects and submits local student entries for competition in the VFW's Patriots Pen (PP), Voice of Democracy (VOD) and, for teachers, Teacher of the Year (TOY). Recently the Post's VOD and TOY winners have won at State level and competed nationally. The Post also conducts Felton's annual Memorial Day Ceremony.

Recently Post 6009 combined with Harrington's VFW Post, more than doubling our membership. With these numbers we expect to expand our capabilities significantly.
